The Tropical Storm Model creates a grid of rainfall intensity and windspeed data based on historic storm data. Green buttons show current selections and purple buttons or dropdown lists allow for a change in selection.
Step 1: Click "CREATE PATH". In the map window click the start point of your storm track. A straight line in the map window will extend from your start point and the button in the control panel will show the status "DRAWING". Click in the map window to set the end point. If you wish to change the storm path then click PATH SET again and redo the operation.
Step 2: Select the storm prototype from the Storm select dropdown. To change the storm clikc the button again and select an alternative storm.
Step 3: Select the Storm category from the select Category dropdown. To change the category click the dropdown again and select an alternative.
Step 4: Select Forward Motion Speed from the Select Forward Motion Speed dropdown. To change the speed click the button again and select from the alternatives.
Step 5: Select RUN MODEL to run the selected Storm Model. This may take a few seconds to complete
When the storm model is complete the View button is highlighted and the grid of modelled values will be displayed. To change the configuration of the view use the controls on the Control panel. You can change the variable, hide and display the storm track and rerun the storm animation or step through it by timestep.
To view time series of individual grid square(s) click in the map to select a grid square or squares. The select menu will be highlighted where selections can be removed. Click show graphs to graph the time series at these points. The data from the model can be downloaded using the download button
The Cariwig portal uses a web mapping platform that allows users to investigate and interact with mapped data. This help document describes the map panel operations.
Each portal map page has the same set of map panel tools. These tools allow the user to navigate the map.
This dropdown allows the user to select their preferred base mapping. The default shows Blue Marble based aerial imagery from Osgeo.org. Currently the user can also select OpenStreetMap data as base mapping.
This panel allows the user to position the map to a specific geographical location. You can select from the dropdown or interactively type the location in the search box. Only major islands are listed in this dropdown.
The icon bar allows the user to set the map navigation mode and to navigate the map
The home button takes the user back to the default regional view
This button changes the mode to “Zoom”. To zoom into the map drag a box whilst depressing the left mouse button. Release the mouse button to zoom in.
On many configurations the mouse wheel can be used to zoom the map in and out as well.
This button allows the user to pan (move) the map. Press and hold the left mouse button whilst moving the mouse in the map panel to pan the map.
zooms the map in by a fixed amount.

This button moves the map view back to the previous view if available
This button moves the map to the next view if available
A Jpeg version of the current map display can be downloaded for use in reports etc.
The show legend button shows the legend for the map. To hide the legend select hide legend
The current map coordinates of the cursor are displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the map (WGS84 Longitude/Latitude)
